The Washington-Lee boys’ swim team won the National District title, posting a score of 404 during the championship meet Jan. 26-28 at Yorktown Aquatic Center.

NOVA Women Capture State Basketball Crown

Vienna’s Carlie Zirkle earns MVP honors.

The Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) women’s basketball team won the 2012 Virginia Community College System (VCCS) Championship by defeating Southside Virginia Community College, 48-26. The tournament was held March 2-4 in Chesapeake. Former Marshall High standout Carlie Zirkle (Vienna) received the most valuable player honor and was named to the All-Tournament team, along with Halley Cummins (Vienna) and Yvette Gilliam (Woodbridge).

Basketball’s Capital Classic Showcase Set for April 21

Preliminary game will feature Westfield’s Zach Elcano and former Chantilly player Kethan Savage.

The 39th Annual Capital Classic high school basketball event, set to take place on Saturday, April 21, will consist of a full day of All Star hoops games at T.C. Williams High in Alexandria.

The Bishop O'Connell football team opened its 2014 season with a 56-14 victory over rival Paul VI on Aug. 29 in Fairfax. The Knights' home opener is at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 6 against Bishop Ireton (1-0).

The Bishop O’Connell softball team won the VISAA state championship with a 5-2 victory over Paul VI on May 15 at Dinwiddie Sports Complex in Sutherland.

Arlington Brief: County Board Requests Redskins Name Change

The Arlington County Board May 19 adopted a resolution calling on the owners of the Redskins to change a team name that the board said is “objectionable to many Americans, Virginians and Arlingtonians,” saying that the team could have a brand new start as it is welcomed into the Commonwealth.
