AHC Inc. has won the 2013 “Nonprofit Developer of the Year” award from the Housing Association of Nonprofit Developers. The award recognizes innovative housing developments, programs and solutions across the Washington, D.C., metro area. The award will be presented during the HAND Annual Meeting, June 11.
In 2012, AHC initiated, preserved or opened five affordable housing projects, providing nearly 1,200 new or renovated apartments in four different jurisdictions in Maryland and Virginia.
AHC’s 2012 projects include:
The Shell, 83 units, Arlington – AHC combined undeveloped land it already owned with an adjacent gas station site to create a new affordable housing community with ground-floor retail along Columbia Pike. The project is under construction.
Arbor Heights, 198 units, Arlington – With Arlington County’s support, AHC purchased and is renovating a 1940s complex that was one of Columbia Pike’s largest remaining affordable communities.
Jackson Crossing, 78 units, Alexandria – AHC is combining several small parcels of land to build a new apartment building on Route 1 near shopping and transportation. The City of Alexandria is a partner.
The Hamptons at Town Center, 768 units, Germantown, Md. – Working with Montgomery County, AHC saved the largest remaining community of affordable rental housing in the I-270 corridor from market-rate development.
Union Rowe, 72 units, Baltimore, Md. – Union Rowe includes renovations of 34 row houses on both sides of a city block.
